Celebrating Small Business Week – May 5 – 11

Your Temporarily Small Business and those 28 million other small U.S. businesses around you supply 120 million Americans with jobs. That’s more than one third of our nation’s population. You contribute $8.5 trillion to our nation’s $17 trillion GDP. Oh, and by the way, 48.7 percent of all new businesses launched in the past decade were started by first generation immigrants.
Lessons?
a) The 18,500 large companies with 500 or more employees make a marvelous competitive frosting on our economic cake. But they, and we, depend on the other 28 million firms to do the rising.

b) The only place we want to be sending our immigrants is down avenues of further opportunity.

And as to wisdom? Here are just a few of the insights that temporarily small business owners have passed our BartsBooks threshold in just the past two weeks:

– I cannot possibly pay my people what they’re worth, so I always make sure to pay them promptly.

– We glance occasionally at the prize, but most of our time is spent negotiating the ground beneath our feet. That’s what will get you there.

– Marketing? We hit a heck of a lot fewer people, and gain a heck of a lot more sales by making personal phone calls to old clients and new ones.

– The key is not how much inventory – but which day – which hour you buy it that makes the profits.

– I cannot think of one job in this whole shop that each one of us does not put his hand to at some time or other.

Wishing the large and the small every success,
– Bart Jackson

Bart Jackson reveals: The Unsettling Settling of Australia

or History & Pre-history Revealed

What was the real reason that the British government rounded up its prisoners and poor and transported them 14,000 miles to Australia in the dawn of the nineteenth century? What are the tribal skills and DNA that have allowed Australian Aborigines for 60,000 years to thrive as the world’s longest continuous culture? What advantages has made the crocodile Australia’s unrivaled predator since Cretaceous times? Speaking before the English Speakers Union on March 31st at the Lawrenceville School, Bart Jackson laid bare the intriguing truths about the Australia’s inhabitants and how they arrived and flourished in the island continent.

Cyber Threats & Defenses

“China is a company masquerading as a country,” stated Alfred Berkeley former NASDAQ CEO and Board Chair of Security First. Recently, I attended the Nassau Club meeting in Princeton, NJ where Al and three FBI security specialists outlined potential cyber-threats and cyber warfare tactics, including China’s clear plans to dominate several global industries, by any means available. Chatting with Al and the FBI agents afterward I picked up two fascinating news bits: Good news – we now have chips large enough to automatically encrypt data (e.g. stock transactions) as they occur, thus protecting data immediately. Unsettling news: China subsidizes its manufacturers with a 17 percent rebate on each deal. Thus Chinese makers can bid and produce at a 10 percent loss and still turn a profit.

Where Old Friends Meet

Conspiring with fellow business cronies – (from right) Angelo Zappala, Mark Reisman, Allen Kohan, and Tom Frederick – at the latest Association for Corporate Growth breakfast. Our topics of chatter? Why data alone makes lousy marketing; What are truly valuable ways to recognize your fellow chaingangers at work, and why New Jersey is the Neiman Marcus of states for business – you pay more and get a lot more.

National Speakers Association NYC

Enmeshed in the warm exchanges and generously shared tips at the National Speakers Association – NYC chapter meeting last Friday, April 5, I quickly realized why this group is noted for its friendly atmosphere. If you’ve got something to say, here’s a fine group to broaden your megaphone. Yet as experienced and talented as all these speakers are, we were all Tsunamied by the tales, tips and engaging demonstrations by guest speaker Steve Spangler. This amiable magician’s son has blended innate talent with a bold mix of dogged persistence and creative fun to become very justifiably one of America’s most sought-after speakers, along with founding Steve Spangler Science, The virally popular Sick Science, Be Amazing Toys and many other projects to humorous to mention. Steve’s best speaking tip: “Don’t give the audience words or activity – give them an experience.”

Restorer of Hope Rewarded – CEOReport

Wed. Jan 24. President & CEO of Maxons Restorations, Inc. Damon Gersh stepped to the podium to receive The Art of the CEO’s Community Contributor Award. In presenting the award, host Bart Jackson noted, “We were looking to praise that firm which labors continually to serve and improve the community around it, and the people at Maxons Restorations have embraced that giving spirit, helping bring back hope to everyone from the victims of hurricane Sandy, to the congregation of historic Trinity Church after the 9/11 attacks.” As part of the award, Damon Gersh is invited to appear on The Art of the CEO radio show as featured guest. In accepting, Mr. Gersh said, “It is a great honor to be singled out and rewarded not only for the work we perform, but the passion our entire team puts behind it.”

The Art of the CEO’s Community Contributor Award was presented as a finale to the CEO Report’s Corporate Culture Awards celebration in which 24 companies from the NY – NJ – CT region were honored exceptionally engaging their entire staff and “making it a pace where A players love to work.” The event was held, amidst great fun and frivolity at Times Square’s newest entertainment theme park, the NFL Experience.
