Gyuri Hollosy

Gyuri Hollosy has a way with women and men.  For the last five decades he has been sculpting visions and versions of them that release inner attributes and emotions that set the viewer’s mind to ponder.  Art is, after all, a way of knowing.   To view his EOS – Goddess of Dawn at the Grounds for Sculpture or his “The Simple Monk” a portrait of his Holiness the Dahlia Lama at the Peace Weavers Meditation Center provide an education in themselves.

Gyuri has held countless shows around the country and received several commissions for monumental works, including the 1956 Hungarian Revolution Memorial in Boston’s Liberty Park Square.  Perhaps almost as valuable as the art he creates, are the visions he has planted – and continues to plant in others.  From 1988 to 2003 he brought new talent to light as director of the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture’s apprenticeship program.

Today, Gyuri makes Studio Seven at The Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ his artistic home.  Here he works and guides a small number of students to labor and create in his studio.  He sees his role as mentor, rather than instructor.  His ability to verbalize the necessary mental/spiritual climate May be seen in his new book Voices in an Artist’s Head – a volume which helps readers put their entire innate artistic sense into whatever project they choose.
